Microsoft has long been a contributor to ALEC.
Just recently the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave some $376,375 to ALEC “to educate and engage its membership on more efficient state budget approaches to drive greater student outcomes, as well as educate them on beneficial ways to recruit, retain, evaluate and compensate effective teaching based upon merit and achievement” No mention is made of whether or not the purpose of that education should be to develop critically thinking citizens capable of self-rule under a democracy or training good corporate workers. The details of the grant are available on the Foundation’s web site.
More information on ALEC’s involvment in education and what it might have in mind with respect to education is can be found in the Daily Kos article entitled, Gates Foundation Bankrolls ALEC.
